Review: La Dolce Via

La Dolce Via
12-58 150st
Whitestone, NY
(718) 747-3652

Items ordered: Cannoli dream cake, rainbow cookie cake, amaretto gelato

Rating out of 5:

I really wanted to like this place, mainly because its so darn cute inside. They have a pink vespa in one window and festively painted walls, but I wasn't impressed with what I tried.
However, I'd be willing to come back to try more gelato flavors, because I don't think its fair to judge them based on one flavor, one time. Its their pastries I was really disappointed in.

The amaretto gelato was alright, I thought the flavor was pretty weak though and I got bored with it fast.

UGH. Looks pretty, doesn't it? I had no reason to think this wouldn't be delicious, which made the let down so much worse. It tastes nothing like cannoli cream, it tastes cream cheese based. I can eat cream cheese on bagels, but on nothing else, and in no other form. I understand people think I'm crazy, but no matter what other ingredients are added it always tastes like
pure cream cheese. Cinnabon's icing is an exception, but I doubt there is any real cream cheese in there.

The rainbow cake also looked delicious, but didn't have much of an almond flavor and it had a strange aftertaste I couldn't quite place.

Maybe I went on an off day, but I couldn't even finish the two mini cakes I bought. Sad.

Review: Salerno Pastry Cafe

Salerno Pastry Cafe
153-71 Cross Island Parkway
718-357-4808

Items ordered:
Creme Brulee
Creme puff with cannoli cream
Creme puff with traditional cream
Creme puff with chocolate cream
Rainbow cookies

Rating out of five:

Salerno's has such an unassuming exterior, and since its tucked away deep into the Whitestone Shopping Center, its easy to completely miss it even if you know where it is. I also found it odd that their business cards list a website that is no longer active.

The creme brulee was good, but I wish the top has been harder- there should be a crunch to it that just wasn't there.

The creme puff with the cannoli cream didn't taste fresh, and over-all I didn't think the two went well together. But the puff with traditional creme was delicious. I'm not a fan of hardened chocolate on anything, so obviously I wasn't a fan of the puff with chocolate.

The rainbow cookies tasted better than they looked, but still weren't good. The almond flavor was too subtle.

This bakery isn't terrible, but there are such better places to spend my money in Whitestone (like Little Cakes!).

Overall rating out of 5:

I was surprised and flattered when Christina, owner of the new-ish cupcakery in Whitestone Queens commented on my blog to tell me she revised her recipes based on my opinions! So two weeks ago I made my way out there once again to taste her revamped creations, and to actually introduce myself. I'm quite shy unless I'm angry about something, so I had to work up the courage to say hi. But Christina is super friendly and we ended up chatting about how much Queens kicks ass (oh yes it does, all you naysayers).

I did get these cupcakes for FREE (the first time I've ever gotten free baked goods as a result of my food blogger status!), and as I've seen other bloggers do, I'll take this moment to state that my review and opinion was in no way effected by the freeness of said cupcakes ;)

First up: vanilla!

The vanilla cupcakes are definitely way less corn muffin-like than they were the first time I tried them. They now have the consistency and taste of a traditional cupcake. What I like about Christina's cupcakes are that they're more dense than your usual cupcake. Don't get me wrong, light and fluffy has its place, but a heavier cake helps balance out the sweet frosting. A good cupcake!

The lemon cupcake:

Oh my, lemon is not my flavor. It feels like I'm eating cake soaked in Pine Sol, and its no reflection on this specific cupcake (which I swear practically squished with freshness from my first bite). This is my first lemon flavored pastry ever, I've avoided them up until this point because I'm not a fan of lemon flavored things. The cake has more of a hint of lemon, the icing is what packs the punch.

The coffee cake cupcake:

I
really wanted to like this cupcake, but its seems to be difficult to put together. So I still think this cupcake needs a little more work. The crumb is more evenly distributed, but it falls off the cupcake when you bite into it. Its also less like the top of a crumb cake and more like pure brown sugar grouped into clumps. I liked the taste of the first version better, the crumb part just needed to cover the entire top of the cake instead of one side. I don't doubt that this is more difficult than it sounds, but I think its worth pursuing, because I don't think I've seen a coffee cake cupcake being offered anywhere else!

The red velvet cupcake:

The cake is too heavy and dense and still has too much cocoa powder for my taste. I completely avoided the frosting cuz, you know, cream cheese! One day I will convince the rest of the world that cream cheese icing doesn't do red velvet cakes justice ;)

The chocolate cupcake:

There are walnuts in this cupcake! I love walnuts and chocolate together. Very dense cake. I usually don't eat chocolate on chocolate. I...have issues with chocolate. Our relationship has been on the rocks for many years now. The chocolate flavor isn't too intense, which I prefer. An overall enjoyable cupcake.

The bedrock cupcake:

I find that Fruity Pebbles and cake usually go well together, and this cupcake is no exception. I love the candy like taste the bits of cereal give.

The rainbow cookie cupcake:

I've saved the best for last! The frosting is
so much better since its been changed! The frosting is now more fudge like, with a deeper, more rich chocolate taste. You can see the difference in color when compared to the old frosting right away. I feel like the flavors work in harmony now. And as always, the cake itself is delicious, filled with almondy goodness. I pretty much inhaled this. If you go to Little Cakes, this is the cupcake you must try.

I hope Christina isn't upset with my (totally untrained and non-professional) opinions >_< A 3/5 means I definitely enjoyed the items I ate, and that I think other people should go and enjoy them too!

Mexican Bakery Juquilita Opens in Woodside

Via Under The 7.

Juquilita Bakery & Deli
50-18 Roosevelt Ave
Woodside, Queens

The best time to come in for these Mexican baked goods is early in the morning, around 8AM. I know nothing about Mexican baked goods, not even a little. It always throws me off that many Hispanic bakeries carry real food as well (as this place will soon be doing), so I tend to avoid them because I don't trust a place that splits its efforts. But that concha looks pretty good.

Rating out of 5:

In November I blogged about a cupcake shop opening up in North Eastern Queens, specifically in Whitestone. This is a big deal because Queens seems to be the forgotten and neglected borough.
Despite the heavy over-development that goes on here, and being the most culturally diverse place in the world, were usually seen as "not worth the trip" by those outside the borough. And I really don't mind that as much as I used to- the moment a place becomes appreciated by the masses is often the moment its ruined by them.

Little Cakes is a sliver of a store situated right off the Cross Island Parkway, accessible only by bus or car (the Q15 or Q76). Its surrounded by a small but lively strip of stores that extends for a few blocks, and includes Cherry Valley (they have the best sandwiches in Queens), Storks Bakery, and La Dolce Via (gelato & pastries).

You can read about the owners success story here.

Anyway, enough chatter, onto to the cupcakes!

From left to right, the top row: Strawberry short cake, crumb cake, red velvet.
From left to right, the bottom row: Rainbow cookie, vanilla, chocolate without frosting.

The vanilla: The cake tastes very similar to a corn muffin, but is softer, which is good. The frosting has a light, whipped texture to it as opposed to often thick buttercream. Overall a decent cupcake, but I didn't think the frosting complimented the cake at all, it did taste just like a corn muffin, after all. If your looking for a familiar comparison, think of a toned down version of Magnolias vanilla- this isn't a sugar bomb, but its still sweet.

The crumb cake: To me, almost all crumb cake tastes the same (like it might as well have come out of an Entenmann's box). I'm sure there are some amazing exceptions out there, but I haven't been fortunate enough to come across them. The cupcake is good, sweet and soft, but as you can see in the picture the hard crumb part is loaded onto one side of the cupcake, leaving the other side bare. Its un-evenness was its only flaw.

Look at those beautiful colors!

The rainbow cookie: By far my favorite cupcake out of the bunch, which surprised me because I had such low expectations for it. Most bakeries have trouble making a proper rainbow cookie, never mind transforming the cookie into a cupcake. But it tasted like a rainbow cookie (it was NOT simply yellow cake dyed rainbow), the almond flavor came through nicely, but the cake itself wasn't heavy with almond paste like the cookies are. It retained the lightness cake is supposed to have. My one issue is the choice of frosting- blech! The chocolate frosting tasted cheap, and not sweet or bitter enough to belong in either category. I wiped it off and ate the cake by itself, its definitely good enough to do that. This cupcake alone gets a 4 out of 5, but if they work on that frosting it could very well become a 5 out of 5. Or maybe a 4 1/2 out of 5, since I'm so damn picky.

Strawberry shortcake: To be honest, I'm not a fan of strawberry flavored things. I got this flavor because the box held six cupcakes, and we had only picked out five, so this was what I went with. Its not a bad cupcake, sweet but not "too sweet" as some say. I just couldn't take more than a couple of bites.

Chocolate without frosting: My roommate got this one, he's a freak who prefers his cakes naked. He described the cupcake as "rich", and said I might like it. I tried a bite, and while it was super moist, I found it more bitter than rich. Not a fan.

Red Velvet: I almost didn't get this one, mainly because I don't like cream cheese frosting, and most bakeries insist on putting it on their red velvet cakes. This was one was no exception, although they do sprinkle some cinnamon on the top- an interesting and unique addition. The icing has a gentle cream cheese flavor, probably the least cream cheesy cream cheese frosting I ever ate (which is why it was not spit out). But I still didn't find it enjoyable. As for the cake itself, its not red velvet. There was no vinegar in it, and without that its just chocolate cake dyed red. It was still decent red chocolate cake, and very moist.

Every cupcake we bought here was fresh, and the staff were friendly and helpful. They also have seasonal flavors, like gingerbread and snowballs. I do think the frosting on the cupcakes needs to be spread around the whole top, and not piled so high, it makes eating it in one piece awkward and its hard to get frosting with each bite.
Over-all a good experience, with solid baked goods. So...come to Queens to check out our cupcakes! And then go home (I of course mean that in the nicest way possible) ;)

Update: Just something to keep in mind, these cupcakes do not keep well, by the next day their a little too stiff to eat, so make sure you eat these babies the day you get em!

Cupcake Shop Opens in Whitestone!

Little Cakes
14-33 150th St,
Queens, NY 11357

I am too exited for words! The cupcake craze has finally dug its way deep into Eastern Queens- possibly the last place you'd expect to see a specialty cupcake shop. Its a tiny store, but it comes with a great story (though I wish the NY Times had included a full address for this place- help a small business owner out!)

Whether Christina kept her business local out of choice or necessity, were happy to have her here (I know I've been waiting a long time for a sugar 'revolution' in the outer boroughs). Best of luck, I can't wait to stop by!
