Sign the Petition Against the New Food Truck Bill

Via NYC, Style, & a Little Cannoli.

If you haven't heard, there is a bill that would effectively make it impossible for food trucks to operate in the city. If a truck gets 3 parking tickets, they are out of business.

So sign the petition, like the Facebook page, and go to Councile Woman Lappin's website or Council Woman Karen Koslowitz's website and let them know what you think.

Some food trucks that sell sweets include Cupcake Stop, Dessert Truck, Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream, Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, Street Sweets, and the Treats Truck.

Looking for even more food trucks? Check out this useful site!

Bloombergs Sugar Related Hypocrisy

The Post has a story about Bloomberg bringing cupcakes to a meeting.

The meeting came just a day after the paper reported that Hizzoner -- who has railed against salt, trans fats, sugar and cigarettes -- had awarded a contract to a Queens bakery allowing it to sell pricey cupcakes on city property.

The city -- after just banning bake sales in schools -- is slated to rake in an extra $108,000 in the first year alone.

I'm so sick of this "do as I say, not as I do" crap.

CNN Declares Cupcakes are More than a Trend

I like this small superficial article that comes to the defense of cupcakes being referred to as a "trend" or "craze". The CNN Living article argues that they've been with us long enough to have become mainstream- an entire decade (2000 was apparently when the Sex in the City episodes aired that featured the characters eating Magnolia's cupcakes, at least that's what Google tells me).
And lets face it, before Sex in the City, most of us were fans of cupcakes that came from our parents ovens.

The Latest Insanity: Sugar Tax

Yes, you read it right. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, a Bronx democrat, wants to tax all products that contain sugar in an effort to fight obesity and raise money. You can read all about it here.

In a letter sent to Governor Patterson, Dinowitz proposes that Patterson alter his current tax proposal (the one that taxes sugary drinks), to include all products with sugar. His reasoning has something to do with not being clear about the stance the city government is taking on fighting obesity (and he wants to raise more money, obviously). He seems to think the fat, stupid public won't get the message that being obese is bad for you if they don't tax all sugar. That we will think one only gets obese from sugary beverages. He's out to save us all from ourselves, donchaknow.

Here's a direct quote from the linked article: "The limited scope of the Governor’s proposal has allowed its intent of encouraging people to live healthier while generating revenue for the state to become muddled. By expanding the number of products that would be covered under the sugar tax we would generate more revenue and provide a greater disincentive to engage in unhealthy behavior.”

Assemblyman Dinowitz, your not my father. Adults are responsible for what they put into their bodies. You don't get to penalize me for my dietary choices. Please stop contributing to the stupidity of the human race as a whole. Same goes for you Felix Ortiz (the guy who wants to ban salt).

Vegans Protest Dunkin Donuts

Via A Fine Blog.

The protesters were handing out free vegan donuts at the East 14th Street Dunkin Donuts (between 2nd and 3rd Avenue) a couple of days ago. They want Dunkin Donuts to carry vegan donuts, but aren't interested in asking DD to switch from factory farmed eggs to a free supplier who treated the chickens humanley, because "that would never happen for such a large chain".

Best Cupcakes in the US

The readers at Luxist, a "luxury" website, have nominated their picks for who makes the best cupcakes in the country. Their taste isn't very luxurious. Crumbs and Magnolias? Really guys?

The Latest Insanity: New York Bans Bake Sales

No more bake sales, they're being replaced by Doritos and Poptarts.

I have no words for this...

Okay, maybe I have a lot of words.

Fuck stupidity. Fuck deals with corporations masquerading as concern for the well being of city children.

Public school lunches are still packed with meat fast food giants wouldn't use, as well as meals comprised of processed foods chock full of preservatives. But that is not a pressing issue- promoting the sale of MORE processed foods is. If they really cared, they would ban the use of the foods they themselves are using, instead of saying things like the following: "We have meals served in the cafeteria that meet those standards, and we want our children to eat there.”- Kathleen Grimm, deputy chancellor for infrastructure and portfolio planning, who oversees the regulation.

Everyone knows that obesity is not caused simply by consuming high calorie foods. Its a combination of OVER-eating and lack of physical activity, so moderation and exercise is key, just like its always been.

The ban doesn't apply to just baked goods, but anything home made. So that international lunch I had the privilege of being a part of in my high school is no more.

Homemade baked goods were around long before high fructose corn syrup, and they will be here after. Don't think for one moment the people who made this decision don't know that these approved additive filled foods are not good for your kids. They simply don't care. And that should piss you off very, very much.
