Cupcakes Take The Cake Fifth Anniversary Party

Thursday night was the Cupcakes Take the Cake Fifth Anniversary Party! The RSVP list filled up one day after tickets were available, so I put myself on a waiting list and didn't expect to get a spot. But I did, and I have some pictures of the event to share! ;)

These were done by Treat, a custom cupcake company. I had the pink ones with fondant.

The first cupcakes I tried were from Kumquat Cupcakery. I've heard their name thrown around a bit, usually people say good things. I had the pink and white frosted mini cupcake. It had a delicious mint frosting. The blue iced one is lemon & lavender.

The next group of mini cupcakes were also disappearing fast, these were from Baked by Melissa. I had the tie dye and the smores cupcakes. In the picture are cinnamon (wish I had known that at the time!) and cookies and cream.

The first table when you walk in has cupcakes from Crumbs. There were lots of different flavors but this is the only picture I have.

The bar

Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

Cupcake Stop (the cupcake truck).

Nibbles by Nora and her famous cupcake kabobs!

Just Cupcakes from Virginia.

The crowd

Owner of Sweet Revenge, the lovely Marlo Scott, who also had cupcakes there, among them vanilla, chocolate, red velvet and chocolate with peanut buttercream.

Some of the ladies behind CTTC. From left to right: Melissa (intern) and founding editors Nichelle & Rachel announcing raffle winners.

The room we were in was on the 16th floor of the Roger Smith Hotel, and had a beautiful view.

But I was shivering so much I couldn't get a clear photo!

I came back inside just in time for the second wave of cupcakes! In my opinion, the best were saved for last. These cupcakes are from Goodie Box Bakeshop in Jersey. The dark ones are red velvet, the lights ones are- ready for this? Yam cupcakes with caramelized ginger on top. One of the most complex tasting cupcakes I've ever had, and delicious. Jersey has some good cupcakes!

My favorite cupcakes of the night were made by Blondie & Brownie. Pumpkin with a delicious spiced buttercream. Simple but intense. Yum!

Much thanks to the ladies of CTTC for having a wonderful party (and a shout out to Joe from the Bronx! *waves hello*) Happy fifth anniversary guys!

Update: Check out Cupcakes Take the Cake's own post with much better pictures! Even more photos are on Flickr and Guest of a Guest.

The Daily News Talks Cupcakes

The article doesn't seem to have a real point, its just rehashing what's already been rehashed under the pretense of covering the new Tonnie's Minis location in Harlem.

It does however mention who was behind the study that looks for a correlation between cupcake shops and gentrification I first saw mentioned on the BBC's website.

Its Kathe Newman, an assistant professor of urban planning and policy development at Rutgers University. It was brought up in an interview at Cakespy in July. But all the links for the project are dead. This is a snippet of what was apparently on the site when it was active:

"NYC has witnessed an extraordinary influx of capital since the early 1990s that has pushed gentrification into the far reaches of the city. We will locate the new gentrification frontier by mapping the location of the plethora of “hip” cupcake-serving bakeries and puppy parlors (dog spas). "

A cupcake tour was scheduled for September, and was planned to serve as the basis for an article that would be submitted to the Urban Affairs Review. No word yet on when the study will be made available.

New Cookbook: The *Complete* Magnolia Bakery Cookbook

The Complete Magnolia Bakery Cookbook
by Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey

I am extremely exited about this! The second I saw it I put it on my gift list.

Like a lot of people, my initiation into cupcake culture started with Magnolia's. I haven't really liked their cupcakes for a couple of years now. You eat enough of it, and of other cupcakes, and you realize there is more out there than just pure sugar. But they have two other products that still have me coming back, standing in long lines in crazy weather.

The red velvet cake, and the banana pudding.
BOTH of these recipes are in this 240 page beauty!

And the price is right, $13.59 (Amazon.com) is dirt cheap.

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes!

Via Cupcakes Take the Cake.

OK, I have not tried this yet, however I was too exited not to post it.

The original recipe is here.
Step by step photos are here.

If anyone tries this recipe I would love to hear how it comes out!

2010 Food Trends

Restaurants & Institutions came out with 20 food related predictions for the coming year, among them "drugstore-counter desserts", which are described as "retro desserts" and include shakes and floats.

My only issue is with the appearance of both coal oven pizza and low carbon footprint dining. How does that work?

Epicurious came out with their own trend list, and according to them mini cupcakes are on their way out, while whoopie pies are so very in.

Personally, I'm not a fan of whoopie pies. Some of the commenters also seem to prefer cupcakes.

Update: Nation's Restaurant News comes out with yet another 2010 food prediction list! This one says that mini & bite size desserts are IN. Take that whoopie pies!
